| MogileFS Maintenance |
[Dec. 2nd, 2009|12:18 pm] |
Hey LJers,
I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be performing some mogilefs maintenance over the next few days. We will be upgrading our current version to latest stable as well as changing some db config information to better handle the amount of files we are currently hosting. This shouldn't cause a big impact on site stability, but you may see some minor delays with userpic / scrapbook images appearing or other requests associated with our mogilefs. We would love to not have that happen, but unfortunately with some of the steps we need to take we have to cause a delay with images. I figured this was a better solution than taking down all of LiveJournal because well lets face it, we all need our daily LJ fix ;)
Thanks, |

| I WON. |
[Nov. 29th, 2009|02:35 am] |

50,042 words.
Considering I wrote the ending sentence at 48,803 words, I'm pretty happy with that word count. The rest of the words came from going back and adding in details, like the stuff that makes Lorelei's world different from ours. The winning words were Lorelei looking out the window at the wall built to protect coastal cities from pirates.
ALSO.
I had Pandora going while I was writing? And it's on my Mono/awesome instrumentals station? And while I was uploading? THERE WAS TOTALLY AN AWESOME EPIC DRUMROLL BUILDUP. And then the music exploded with happiness when the winner's page loaded. BEST TIMING EVER.
CAPSLOCK MEANS I AM EXCITED, OKAY?
Tomorrow, I am going to play Animal Crossing ALL DAY LONG. Or possibly I will just be lazy in another way. |

Here's a question, has there ever been a remix album that didn't make the majority of the songs significantly worse? This post inspired by Tanto Tempo Remixes, by Bebel Gilberto.
I listen to Bebel Gilberto because I am lightly obsessed with Brazil for some reason. For some reason they're quite good at entertainment. |

One of the strange things about MaR is that I do the entries often well in advance (I'm up to December 1 right now, will likely do a couple more this weekend) so when something really bugs me - or impresses me - I find it annoying to not really say anything until the day of the update. While I might want to tell the world who I have decided is the worst working director today (the answer will likely not surprise you) I can't help but think I'll spoil the surprise when they actually show up on the thing.
I am quite glad I have no idea if anyone reads it. I'm not sure if I'd be terrified that other people do or disappointed that nobody else does. Ah well, I just do it for my own fun. |

| SCIENCE |
[Nov. 23rd, 2009|12:56 pm] |
This is excellent. - It is shameful that the country that put a man on the freaking moon is now ranked at the bottom of the list in science and math education. Purely shameful. - Science IS awesome, and kids need to be shown this so that they will use science to make the world even more awesome. We can't cure cancer if people stop studying science! - If people are educated about how science works, hopefully we can cut out all this pseudoscience nonsense that keeps getting passed around as "valid". Maybe then we can actually eliminate some more diseases once people realize that vaccines are GOOD, not an evil plot to let aliens control our brains (or whatever it is Jenny McCarthy is claiming today). - Also, if people respect science a little more, hopefully we can stop turning science into a political game and actually ACT on what we learn, instead of trying to pretend there are two sides to everything ever. Sometimes, facts is just facts, and if those facts disagree with your party line then you need to just get over it. When science is saying HEY GUYS THIS IS HAPPENING you can't just ignore it because it will hurt your political campaign! - Oh, and I love love love the idea of getting science into little-kid shows like Sesame Street, because I earnestly believe that we neeeeeeed to get kids curious about the world. Creativity and curiosity are SUCH GOOD THINGS. It's the "teach a man to fish" thing- if you teach kids how to explore their world at a young age, they will forever be questing to learn more, so you won't have to try to MAKE them learn any more than you have to MAKE them eat their dessert.
Basically, ROCK ON, OBAMA. |

| Pitchforks drawn |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|10:33 pm] |
Why do I still visit Pitchfork? Their reviews are completely incomprehensible, and they keep trying make really bad albums catch on for some reason - Nouns by No Age, a rare album which had me exclaiming "Wow, this is really bad, I can't believe how bad this." while listening to it. I can't think of a single thing in my life that has been enhanced by Pitchfork - and several things that have been made worse, like the minutes spent listening to the aforementioned album. So why on earth do I keep going there? Explain this to me!
To end on a positive note, I sure do like the Wainwrights. Rufus, Martha, Loudon III, all for different reasons, but I like 'em all. |

| PALM STRIKE! |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|07:47 pm] |

Went to Hyena's Comedy Club in Dallas @ Mockingbird Station last night to see a sold-out show with Graham Elwood & Doug Benson. What you see there is the preferred seating section where I was at, RIGHT NEXT TO THE FREAKING STAGE.
They were both funny in their own ways, but personally I preferred Graham's bit to Doug's, if for nothing more than he's the guy I used to watch on GSN's Cram and USA Cable's Strip Poker. Not to mention he didn't seem to be quite as loaded up on weed before the show like his partner, making him much easier to understand. I'm surprised he thought that Texans would actually understand jokes about snowboarding...
Anyways, I think Graham was a bit flattered when I spoke to him after the show that I'd mentioned "soyrizo" to him, which is something he talks about on his Facebook page. In turn, when I bought one of his Live from Afghanistan DVD's (which part of the proceeds go to disabled veterans, very cool) and a Palm Strike T-Shirt, he autographed the DVD- "Gilliam- Soyrizo! Graham Elwood". Overall he was a really cool guy that I'm glad I got the chance to meet, for sure. |

| I feel this is a step toward success |
[Nov. 20th, 2009|11:25 pm] |
I want the internet to know that I have a hankerin' for some Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and I and my Gamecube/GBA player are going to see what we can do about this.
Is it bad that I'm going to need an FAQ?
Oh! And Castle Of Shikigami III is only $10 at Gamestop now, brand new! You arcade shooter fans who still have a Wii and long for a game with the arcade feel should take note. |

You might've already read my diatribes about how much I hate Twilight. But this time, I got paid for them. We've already covered this territory before, but please, click through and do some diggs for me. I would love that. |
